We’re talking about expanding our transport capabilities to MN, NY, and maybe WI. To be able to do this, we need a team of people to help coordinate transports, snip and chip events, and foster support.
Let’s start with transports first and we’ll look at snip and chip events and foster support another day.
For now, we’re looking for at least three volunteers to take responsibility for a destination. If two or more people share duties, we may need a few more volunteers.
What’s required?
– Know what the destination group is looking for in dogs being transported to them. (Puppies, dogs, no pitties, pitties okay, big dogs, small dogs, spayed/neutered, heartworm negative only, etc)
– Search for dogs available in the group that meet destination parameters
– Once identified, get approval to make an offer to the owner — in some cases we offer to spay a mama dog in exchange for the puppies, and that’s a cost to the organization we need to make sure we can handle
– Once the offer is made to the owner and accepted, the volunteer will need to ensure all tasks required for transport are completed and documented. They don’t have to complete these tasks themselves, but it’s helpful if they can do some of them
– Once the transport is approved and all prep is completed, a health certificate must be obtained within the appropriate window for travel (it varies by state, so we need to know each transport’s requirements).
– Coordinate with the appropriate rescue to ensure we are on track for each shipment
– If the transport coordinator isn’t transporting to the pickup location, they need to make sure someone is available to do the transport and has all the appropriate paperwork to pass to the transporting organization.
If you can do some but not all of these tasks, it isn’t a deal-breaker. We’ll just have to find another person who can do what you can’t do, and we’ll have a team.
